About Us
Errol Caldwell was
born in Belleville, Ontario and raised in nearby Trenton where he first
became interested in woodturning while attending Trenton High School.
After
obtaining his Master's degree in entomology from the University of
Guelph, he began his science career, with the federal government, in
agriculture and forestry.
A lover of all wood and forms of woodworking, Errol delights in recycling wood
salvaged from various sources including firewood, tree removal operations,
landfill sites, shorelines, discarded Christmas trees and logging operations
and transforms it into one-of-a-kind woodturnings.
Native and exotic lumber is also used to form solid or segmented woodturnings
of various shapes and sizes. His favorite pastime of woodworking and woodturning
resulted into the creation of a formal business in 1996.
Errol delights in turning woods from various sources including woodlot owners, tree surgeons, homeowners, shorelines, and logging operations and transforms it into one-of-a-kind woodturnings. Wood for turning is also purchased from several specialty wood and woodturning suppliers.
Favourite woods to turn include a number of trees which produce burls e.g. maple, yellow and white birch, black cherry, white cedar, and when he can find it, one of his most favourites - black ash burl. Exotics which produce burls like eucalyptus species, are purchased from specialty suppliers. Burls are "bumps on a log" - tree growths that can be caused by a number of things including insects, tree fungi or environmental stress. Errol also turns spalted woods like maple and birch. Spalting can be various colours and patterns but most common are the black line you often see in woods that are being attacked by wood decay fungi. If turned while the wood is still sound the effects can be spectacular.
